Allure of good food and great music |
GEORGE TOWN: Penang is synonymous with good food and there is a place where you will be spoiled for choice, really spoiled. Red Garden Food Paradise, a food court in Jalan Penang, has scores of stalls offering a wide array of hawker food. Besides local fare, such as fried koay teow, chicken rice, fried rice, laksa and curry mee, food from Asian countries such as Japan, the Philippines and Thailand are also offered. Of course, the delicious food also attracts tourists. A group of four 27-year-old Austrians said they found out about the place on the Internet. "The food is very good. There are plenty of options," said Uli Sohlmann who was with his friends Ema Rajkovic, Alex Wieselthaler and Barbara Euge. Many diners frequent the four-year-old food court because they enjoy the performances of the bands and professional singers. Wong Cheng Shee, 59, and Chang Hoi Chian, 58, of Sungai Nibong, said they were at the food court once a week because they enjoyed listening to the evergreen oldies. The couple started doing this three months ago. "There is also plenty of food. We come here to while away the time," said Wong, adding that they spent up to three hours at the food court each time. Indian stage and film actress and writer Dolly Thakore, 68, said she had a blast with the good food and great songs. She also danced with a singer to the song Your Cheating Heart. "I love it here. I had wanted to dance with the singer, but she came down from stage instead," said Takore, who was at Red Garden with family members to celebrate her sister's birthday.
